 CHAMPION PROFILES - Hailee Popoff

Northport 2023 Hornet Champ

When COVID invaded the world back in 2020 Hailee Popoff found herself bored while cooped up around Castlegar, British Columbia.

“I started building my race car because it gave me something to do,” Popoff wrote in an email.

Quarantined in Canada, however, Popoff was not able to race he car until 2022 once the boarder opened. And just two seasons into her hobby, Popoff reigns as the champion in 2023 in the Hornets class at Northport International Raceway.

Popoff got into racing because of her dad, Dave as she I grew up at the track watching him race in the modifies class.

Dave Popoff raced old-style modifieds until 2023 when he bought a new car.

Popoff, a 17-year-old high school student, may have to put her fun on the track aside after graduation in 2024, however. She plans to begin a course of study in heavy duty mechanics.

“As a heavy duty mechanic, you get to work on and fix big trucks like semis,” she explained. “For school I still have to apply but I hope to go to Alberta Canada,” she said.

“I wanted to go into heavy duty mechanics because I love learning and working on cars and that was a good way to do it and a good way to make money,” Popoff wrote.
