“Been worse, but can’t recall when.” —Dave

David William Atherton was born in Illinois and spent much of his childhood in Mindanao and Manila, an international upbringing that shaped his adventurous spirit and lifelong curiosity. In his late teens, he returned to the United States and, as he often stated, promptly “won the only lottery I ever won”—which happened to be a round-trip ticket to Vietnam. He arrived in Saigon during the waning chapters of the war, marking the start of a distinguished 20-year career in the U.S. Army.

His military service as an intelligence analyst took him around the world, with chapters of his life unfolding in Thailand, Panama, California, Arizona, Japan, Germany, and Hawaii. Along the way, he learned to speak Tagalog, Japanese, German, Thai, and Vietnamese, often connecting with others through humor and humility. His work recovering the remains of U.S. soldiers who served in the Vietnam War was deeply meaningful to him, driven by the hope of bringing healing to their families.

After retiring from the military, Dave made his home in Deer Park, Washington, where he pursued a second career in real estate. An artist at heart, he loved woodworking, stone cutting, rock tumbling, jewelry making, and stamp collecting. He spent countless hours in his shop crafting beautiful objects and working on projects. He also had a deep connection to the land and found great peace in growing many varieties of daylilies and vegetables.

Dave had an enduring love for God, and his Christian faith was a cornerstone of his life. It shaped how he treated others—with kindness and generosity.

He was proud of his family and cherished the time he spent with family and friends. Known for his quick wit and even quicker jokes, he had a knack for making people laugh and feel at ease. Dave lived a full, meaningful life marked by service, creativity, love, and faith. He will be remembered with gratitude and affection by all who had the blessing of knowing him.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, William and Ruth Atherton (née Byham). He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Sumontha; his children, Monique, William, and Danny (Shanoaha Smith); and his siblings, Debbie Warkentin (John), Tom Atherton, and Joy Luff (Richard). He will also be remembered by many extended family members and friends whom he cherished. A private service will be held for the immediate family.

In honor and celebration of Dave, we invite you to reach out to a loved one, sing your favorite song with abandon, make something with your hands, or share your best joke.
